Episode# 6: A Hunter We Will Go!

Episode# 6 is now live and available for download. Thanks to Kris and Heather for joining us as our special guests. This week, we feature Hunters in the first part of our class series. Enjoy!

SHOW NOTES:

THE BREAKING WIND

In our new NEWS FOR NOOBS segment, we discuss the ramifications of Blizzard’s recent decision to issue Cease and Desist orders to the makers of the following iPhone apps:

  • Armory Browser
  • Warcraft Arena Calculator
  • Warcraft Characters

Jesse also recounts his recent events regarding account hacking and the new Blizzard iPhone authenticator. A definite listen for anyone who is an active officer or Guild leader.

A HELPING HAND

In our tips and tricks segment, we feature the first in our class series. In this week’s episode, we focus on one of the more popular classes: Hunters! Special guests Kris and Heather join-in for a lively discussion of all-things Hunter related.

In our discussion, we cover:

  • Getting through those first 9 levels with your hunter
  • Hunter pets, the three pet talent trees (Ferocity, Cunning and Tenacity) and which ones we recommend for new hunters
  • Hunter talent specs, including an overall discussion of the differences between Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival and which one we recommend for new players
  • Hunter spell rotations (i.e. which spells to cast in which order)
  • Recommended Hunter Glyphs

For the greatest rundown of in-game training pets, all hunters should check out this site: PETOPIA. This site gives a run-down of every in-game training pet, as well as providing recommendations and great hunter information.

THE RAZOR’S EDGE

This week, we take a slight detour with The Razor’s Edge. Since we were not all able to decide on an addon that we recommend for Hunters, Mick hands out two suggestions that are both both and informational! The first is a fun little addon that brings back memories for any old Warcraft 2 or 3 players called A Peon’s Burden. The second is a much more helpful addon that also applies to Hunter’s. OmniCC provides a much more effective way of showing the player the cooldown left on a specific spell. A definite must-have for every player!

LISTENER EMAIL

No new emails this week (although we got a ton after we recorded the episode). However, Mick gives a shoutout to the plethora of iTunes reviews we received in the past few days. Thanks to everyone who left us reviews!

The plan is to feature guests (with experience in each class) every week to discuss a different class. Hunter’s will be our first class, starting with Episode# 6, so send in your questions now!

A HELPING HAND

In our tips and tricks segment, we feature our first special guest on the show, Brent from New Zealand. We discuss his life-changing (well, at least game-changing) forum post on how to maximize your money-making potential in the World of Warcraft.

In our discussion, we cover:

  • Why NOT to buy gold!
  • The importance of looting EVERYTHING, including those grey and white items.

Episode# 4: Instances, Party and Loot Oh My!

Episode# 4 is now live and available for download. It’s a big one…almost two hours in length, but there’s alot to catch up on for the week. Note: Sorry for those who may have been caught downloading the podcast EARLY on Tuesday morning. There was a “misedit” in the original published podcast and we had to take it down to save face. Everything is fixed and back online! Enjoy.

SHOW NOTES:

THE BREAKING WIND

In our new NEWS FOR NOOBS segment, we discuss the release of Patch 3.1 and ALL of the problems the patch caused. Mick and I take sides as we debate whether or not the free day granted by Blizzard (in response to all of the problems) was compensation enough for all of the problems players had to endure.

We also discuss some of the additional changes brought on by the patch including addon breakage, the hearthstone cooldown halved from 60 minutes to 30 minutes, the talent point reset and class changes.

For a solid breakdown of class changes for Patch 3.1, we suggest you visit this link. It’s a great summary of ALL of the class changes and comments on how it may affect your playstyle!

Lastly, we cover the latest news that Curse.com and Wowinterface.com have effectively blocked all addon downloads from anyone using the WoWMatrix addon client. If you’re one of the many WoWMatrix client users, it’s time to try something else!

A HELPING HAND

In our tips and tricks segment, we discuss Instances (or Dungeons), parties and raids and, most importantly, party looting etiquette. We define what an instance is (and why it’s called that?!), help to explain the difference between a party and a raid and also provide some resources on where to find instances (see links below) and how to run them with your fellow WoW players!

Check out these sites (wowhead and wowwiki) to find the where and how regarding instances.

For the party/raid discussion, we cover party roles (Tank, Healer and DPS). We also define three common party/raid terms: Aggro, Wiping and Pulling that are key to understanding party/raid dynamics.

Lastly, we discuss the delicate issue of Party Looting. We start it off with a REAL-LIFE recording of a raid-leader gone crazy (mp3 clip courtesy of Taverncast). We define two distinct different item types (when it comes to looting):   BIND ON EQUIP and BIND ON PICKUP. And we wrap up the discussion with recommendations on how to approach looting in party including some golden rules to follow.

For more details regarding looting in party, including further definitions of the NEED, GREED and PASS system, check out the following links:

THE RAZOR’S EDGE

In the tradition of The Starting Zone, we focus on addons that relate to our helping hand segment. In this episode, we outline two helpful addons that provide helpful ways in which to manage your role in a party: Omen Threat Meter (for keeping track of your threat) and Healbot (for easy management of party and raid healing).

LISTENER EMAIL

We read through our first listener email…thanks Nikkie! We discuss recommended addons for Paladins, how to find HELPFUL guilds across various servers and also recommend a site (Talent Chic) for guidance in selecting your Patch 3.1 talent specs.

Here are links to the Gear Manager Addon Alternatives:

A HELPING HAND

In our tips and tricks segment, we focus on the basics to in-game professions including a brief rundown of each profession, where and how to train and level these professions and which ones we recommend to new players. For those looking for a guide to help in the profession leveling process, visit this link.

We also mention a website that helps guide players to the correct zone in which to level a particular gathering profession (herbs and mining). Click here to visit the World of Warcraft World Map and then click on the appropriate check boxes to the right of the screen to select the herb or mining ore you’re looking for.

THE RAZOR’S EDGE

Episode# 2: The Breaking Wind!

Episode# 002 is live! Good times with this episode as I’m forced to record in my car in order to keep from waking the baby.

SHOW NOTES:

THE BREAKING WIND

In our new NEWS FOR NOOBS segment, we touch on the fun that was April Fools (courtesy of the imaginative folks at Blizzard) and the world of Patch 3.1 including a semi-lively discussion on the usefulness of duel-specs for new players. Oh, and we say goodbye to a major contributor to the WOW community, BRK.

For those who missed the April Fools jokes, Blizzard still has them available at the links below:

A HELPING HAND

In our tips and tricks segment, we discuss ways in which to make the leveling process more enjoyable. Highlights include out-of-game websites that provide detailed quest information, whether or not to run the low-level dungeons (instances) and where to find FREE leveling guides that are actually worthwhile. Here are the links to the websites we mention:

THE RAZOR’S EDGE

The addon discussion begins with a recap of Blizzard’s recent announcement regarding restrictions on the addon community. We also outline three addons that we recommend to aid in the leveling process: TomTom, TourGuide and Lightheaded.

Episode# 1: Where to begin…

After much anticipation, Episode# 1 is finally up! Take a listen and let us know what you think.

SHOW NOTES:

A HELPING HAND

We start off our “tips and tricks” segment with three simple things that EVERY World of Warcraft player should know. How to turn on Instant Quest Text, how to put your character on auto-run and finally, should you buy that gear from your local neighborhood vendor? We also decided to throw in a wee little breakdown of all the different “levels” of gear and their corresponding colors.

THE RAZOR’S EDGE

In this weekly segment, we dedicate some time to recommending addons that we feel are helpful for new players. Starting off, we thought we’d explain what the HECK addons (or mods) really are, how to install them and whether they’re a form of cheating in-game!

MINISTRY OF TRUTH GUILD ANNOUNCEMENTS

Finally, we wrap up our “pilot episode” with some annoucements surrounding our guild, the Ministry of Truth. Big leveling news as Snarlstorm gets his first character to 60 and Lunura does her best to catch me at 70 (wink, wink). Plus we talk a little bit about “vanilla-WoW” dungeons and how they can STILL be a very enjoyable part of the game!

Enjoy!
